Teacher Self Care

My district has purchased The Distance Learning Playbook by Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey and John Hattie, to assist in guiding our distance learning efforts for this upcoming school year.  While our district hasn't fully decided what our school year will look like, we do know it will look different, and our administration wanted us to be as prepared as possible. Although it is still technically summer, teachers were able to get their hands on this playbook, if they wanted, to start mentally preparing for what school might look like.  I jumped at the chance...... my brain HAS to start preparing or I will go cRaZy!

If you think you might be tasked with distance learning, whether at 100%, a hybrid model or a crisis shutdown if a Covid-19 outbreak happens, I highly recommend this book.  It's a wonderfully accessible read which details research and evidence based strategies teachers can employ to deliver high impact learning online, virtual or in an distributed environment.  If you want more of a sample, visit Corwin's website where they offer a complimentary download introduction of the book.

The very first module (of 9) is about self care. I was a bit surprised this was the first module, but after reading through it made total sense.  We can't take care of others, unless we have first taken care of ourselves.  If we are stressed, overwhelmed, anxious and exhausted...what good are we to our students?

In order to keep your cup filled, it is important to have a plan. A plan to keep you mentally healthy during times of crisis (looking at you Covid-19).  Use these following tips to help you come up with a plan specific to distance learning taken from Module 1 of the Distance Learning Playbook

1. Keep a dedicated workspace at home (this doesn't have to be a specific room, but could be a corner in your bedroom or kitchen.  Wherever it is, set ground rules for others in your home about your workspace. At my home, since my husband and I are both teachers, we share a workspace--but at different hours of the day.  We are lucky to have a spare room in the basement, where we have space and privacy.   However, we need to spend more time making the space feel more like a "classroom" by hanging up marker boards, organizing supplies and decorating.

2.  Create a routine Routines are great for our brains--brains love predictability.  Routines help us stay organized and are predictable.  I know when my "normal routine" gets interrupted, I can become frazzled--which is how the start of "crisis learning" went for me, and likely many others.  Our whole world got rocked, and we didn't know how to re-establish routines.  So, before beginning distance learning create a morning and ending routine.  My morning routine is beginning the day with a walk, and my ending routine is spending time watching tv with my family.  Those are the bookends to my day. Routines don't have to be long or elaborate, rather something that signifies a clear start and end.

3. Stay connected with people outside your home Humans thrive on both personal and professional connections and we shouldn't forget this when we are teaching remotely. This was a struggle for me during crisis learning--yes I had the occasional text conversation and attended PLC meetings with colleagues--but I didn't have a plan to stay connected on a regular basis.  If my school enters a distance learning phase, I plan to text a friend or family member daily.  I also plan to search for PD opportunities that I can attend virtually each month.

4. Stay Healthy.  This means having a plan for when you do get stressed or overwhelmed.  Eat healthy. Exercise. Get regular sleep.

One important note---if you are experiencing overwhelming anxiety, sadness or stress please seek professional help.  You aren't good to anyone else, unless you have taken care of yourself first.

Lastly, a few weeks ago I posted about 7 ways you can help kids cope with anxiety.  If you haven't had a chance to read it--- please take a moment as the tips were great for helping kids cope, yet also useful for adults and fits nicely with the topic of self care.

Wordless Wednesday

Happy Wednesday everyone!  I must admit....I didn't even realize today was Wednesday, until my husband said something about it!

I suppose that's what happens when teachers start summer break....every day turns into Saturday! :) And I have been living the "everyday is a Saturday world" for a solid week now.

Anyway....if it is Wednesday, then that means Miss DeCarbo is hosting her weekly linky: Wordless Wednesday!

Even though I am excited about summer break....there is someone in my house that doesn't share my same sentiments.  This somebody is pictured above.

Rudy is pretty bummed that she has to wait TWO WHOLE MONTHS before seeing kiddos.  I'll try and make her summer enjoyable....long walks, swimming, doggy parks and visiting retirement homes.

Oh the life of a therapy dog.....

Teacher's Pet: Linky Party

Today I'm linking up with some great blogging buds for their Teacher's Pet Linky Party! :)

Its a pretty great party because you get to meet some furry friends that belong to some of your favorite bloggers!  AND....let's face it....who doesn't love looking at cute pics of furry little friends! :

Without further ado......I would like to introduce you to my furry friend.  Her name is Rudy Sue....and she is one. amazing. pooch!

Now some of you may have read about Rudy in my Furry Therapist blog post.  You see.....Rudy and I applied for a grant back in September to fund therapy dog classes for her.  Lucky for us, the grant was funded!!  Thank you Valley Center Education Foundation!!

Rudy and I have spent all winter in classes and training in order for her to become a certified dog therapist!  Below are some pics of her during her training, which started in November.

She did so well in class and passed both tests (Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog International) with flying colors!  Below is the obligatory "It's the last day of class and I passed my test" picture.  She's such a cutie!

Now my sweet baby pup gets to come to work with me each day!  Rudy and I still have more classes to take---next up is her Professional Therapy Dog license! :)

So, as you know, Rudy is my class pet! Well---more like---she is the whole school pet!  She is now apart of the Valley Center Intermediate School Family!

Rudy started coming to school about three weeks ago.  For the first week, Rudy stayed solely in my classroom. We wanted to give Rudy this week to become accustomed to the school and her new surroundings.  Before and after school we would practice walking the hallways--which gave her a chance to sniff around and really familiarize herself with the school!

Once her one week trial period was over---I started taking Rudy to every homeroom (all 16 of them--8 fifth and 8 sixth).

The point of taking her to homeroom classes was to introduce her to the kiddos, explain  the purpose of a dog therapist and provide some of the rules for Rudy.  I wanted the kids to know that in order for Rudy to be a part of our school family--they needed to help her be successful!

The kids ATE UP my presentation....and are following all of the rules.  In fact they are going above and beyond to create the best possible environment for Rudy!

Rudy is quite the celebrity at our school.  The kids ADORE her as much as she adores them!  She is a perfect therapy dog.....making kids happy when they are sad, helping them with their learning and even providing stress relief for staff! :)

I couldn't be more proud of Rudy......she is one amazing class school pet! :)

Here are some facts about Rudy Sue.....

1. She loves snow!!!

2. She also loves going for walks and swimming! :)
3. She is allergic to EVERYTHING--and only eats salmon and dried sweet potato.
4. She is a Kansas State University and Kansas City Chiefs fan!
5. She is going to turn 6 years young on April 3rd.
6. We adopted her from the Kansas Humane Society, after animal control found her abandoned in a local park.
7. By the end of her busy day---she is ready for a nap!

8.  She has a big HUGE heart and LOVES everyone!

That's pretty much Rudy in a nutshell!

If you would like to follow Rudy....she has her own facebook, instagram and twitter!

Currently December

I deserve a big ol' pat on the back.....because....I am actually linking up with Farley from Oh' Boy 4th Grade on the correct day for her linky party.

I am So. Proud. Of. Myself!!

Listening--I am currently listening to Monday Night Football......as I have said before....sports are ALWAYS on at my house.  And....I am okay with that!

Loving-- Today the hubs and I made a quick stop at Dollar Tree after school.  He needed to pick up some cheap playing cards for a math game he is going to play with his kiddos tomorrow (more on that later.)  I wanted to find some **cheap** kitchen timers. You see...I use timers A LOT in my classroom--and the ones I have are kinda on their last leg!

I didn't actually think Dollar Tree would have kitchen timers, and I wasn't really looking forward to buying several timers for $8-$10 a pop .  BUT--much to my surprise--Dollar Tree did have timers!!  WOOOOO HOOOOO----and they were only a buck!!  Yessssssss!!

I'll let you know how well they work after I use them!

Thinking--Tomorrow Rudy begins her training to become a licensed therapy dog! If you want to know more, read about it here! I have so many emotions going through me---excitement, nervousness, pride.....I just can't wait for her to begin touching the lives of the students at VCIS!  Wish me (and Rudy) luck tomorrow!

Wanting-- To see Mockingjay! Has anyone seen it??  Is it good??

Needing--Time to go Christmas shopping!  I have barely done any shopping for the holidays---and it is beginning to stress me out a wee bit!

Giving--Flarp.

Yes, that's right.....I am giving fart in a can to my secret buddy.

Before you judge---I think he is going to love it, and my goal is to make my secret buddy smile!  Have you heard about the secret buddy program?  If not read about it here!

A Furry Therapist?!?!

I did it!!

Today I sealed up and mailed off my very first grant application!!

You see.....my school district has this amazing group, called the Valley Center Education Foundation.  Each year the Foundation does a back to school presentation to encourage teachers to submit grant applications for anything they need (or want), yet can't afford, to enhance the education of their students.  The Foundation has funded countless projects over the years, including Ipads for the classroom, purchase of music equipment, field trips, etc.

For quite some time now, I have been itching to write a grant to submit to the Foundation.  However.....I didn't just want to write any ol' grant.......I wanted to author a grant with meaning.  Something that was my passion!!

Well........Over the summer a light bulb went off in my head.....and I knew, I just knew, what I wanted my very first grant request to be.

The title of my application is called VCIS Furry Therapist.

You see....a Furry Therapist is something I am EXTREMELY passionate about!  Having a therapy dog as a member of our school, is something that I know, wholeheartedly know, will positively impact the lives of students.

Pictured above is my precious chocolate lab named Rudy.  She is an awesome dog (although I may be a little biased), Ha! During summer break I get to spend lots of time with this adorable pup!! So, on one of those scorching days this summer it hit me.....like a ton of bricks.  I thought to myself, "Man....Rudy would be one AWESOME therapy dog for my school."  I mean, Rudy is amazingly calm, highly trained (she doesn't even bark....not one peep), great with strangers, great with kiddos.....she is just AWESOME!  I know she would be a perfect candidate for therapy dog!  I without a doubt, know kids will love her!!

So, I did it.....I submitted an grant application for funds to get Rudy trained to become a therapy dog.

So.....if you have time....say a little prayer for me, Rudy and the students at my school that my application gets picked!!  Now....even if my application doesn't get selected, I can't be too sad because....I know the Foundation will be paying for many other super opportunities for kids.....and there is always next year!

Oh....and if any of my bloggy buddies have a therapy dog in their school, or have a therapy dog of their own....I would love to hear tips or suggestions!
